As a child Sara was targeted for racial discrimination by many people in America. When she was in 9th grade she started to feel more comfortable after she was praised by her teachers when she sang at the school's audition. It not only boosted her confidence but also shifted the direction she wanted to go in her career. The 22-year-old earned a degree from the Julliard School in New York. In 1993, she made her Broadway debut with Paul Simon's The Capeman. Her first film was titled You've got Mail. But her biggest break came when she played the character in the role of The Lady of The Lake in the very first Broadway performance of Spamalot receiving not just the Tony Award for her performance but also a flurry of praise from critics. Later in the same year she was cast in the ABC show Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Callie Torres and gained wider appreciation for her performance. A well-known performer, she also has released an album and a musical. Also, she's an activist and is a tireless advocate for LGBT rights.
