Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first television appearances were as Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. Her parents did not allow her to begin acting in front of her family until an adulthood stage, because they were concerned about the anxiety it could create. Perry stated she felt shy to act at the age of 16, but she began acting in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocated to New York in search of acting roles on television. Perry was able to land small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness drove her to California to find theater work. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. Perry was in the show with their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was a part of the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on the ABC drama The Family. Perry was a regular character in the ABC drama about politics Scandal, starring her dad. She played the role of the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The role was given an audition to the actress, even though she has a family tie to the character.
